Choosing a commercial electrical contractor
Whoever you appoint, ask for these before work starts:
- Registration. NICEIC (or another competent person scheme), so work is certified properly. We are NICEIC approved and ECA members.
- Health and safety accreditation. CHAS, SafeContractor or Constructionline, so your facilities team does not have to vet us from scratch. We hold all three.
- Who does the work. Employed engineers or a chain of subcontractors? Ours are employed by SEG.
- RAMS before, certificates after. If a contractor can’t show you both, keep looking.
- One contact for everything. Electrics, emergency lighting, data and access control from one firm means one programme and one set of records.
How we work in London buildings
- Survey. We visit, look at the installation and agree what you need.
- Plan around the building. Access times, permits, loading bays and noisy-work windows agreed with your building manager.
- RAMS. Risk assessments and method statements issued before we start.
- The work. Done by our own engineers, phased so your business keeps running.
- Certificates and handover. Certificates and test results at the end.
Questions we’re asked
Do you work in central London?
Yes. Our engineers work regularly in St James’s, the City, Holborn and Camden, as well as north and west London, from our head office in St Albans.
Can you work around a live office?
Yes. Noisy or disruptive work is planned for early mornings, evenings or weekends, and we agree access, permits and building rules with your building manager before we start.
Do you handle access control and data as well as electrics?
Yes. We have installed access control, maglocks, AV and data cabling in London offices, alongside the electrical work, so you deal with one contractor.
What paperwork do we get?
RAMS before we start; electrical installation or minor works certificates when we finish; EICRs for inspections; and test results for data cabling.
How often should a London office have its electrics tested?
IET Guidance Note 3 recommends a fixed wiring inspection at least every 5 years for offices, emergency lighting tested monthly with a full-duration test every year, and fire alarms serviced at least every 6 months.
Need it done by a date?
Tell us the deadline. We’ll tell you honestly whether we can hit it — and we usually can.
