What is a mains supply and what is a sub-main?
The mains supply is the cable that brings electricity from the network operator into your building, ending at the meter and main switch. A sub-main is a cable that carries power on from that main distribution board to another distribution board, such as one on another floor, in a tenant’s unit, a workshop or an outbuilding. Think of the mains as the front door of the supply and sub-mains as the corridors from it to each room.
How a sub-main is sized
Choosing the cable is a design calculation, not a guess. We work out the load the board will carry, the length of the run, how much voltage will be lost along it, the fault current that could flow, how the cable will be installed and how it will be protected and earthed. Steel wire armoured cable is common for sub-mains. Where a cable must keep working in a fire, a fire-resistant cable is used. The result is certified and tested before it goes live.
