The Specialist Electrical Group Ltd — SEG — is a NICEIC-approved electrical contractor based at SEG House in St Albans. Our directors have run electrical contracting businesses in Hertfordshire since 1995: Russell Solts founded his first in 1995 and served on the board of the Electrical Contractors’ Association, and Michael Simm has run his own since 2010. We employ our own engineers, train our own apprentices, photograph every job and run the business on software we built ourselves.

SEGplc stands for Power, Lighting & Compliance. SEGplc is the trading name of The Specialist Electrical Group Ltd (Company No. 11464567), a private limited company. See our brand, logo and company details. Our name on Facebook, previously “Specialist Electrical Group Ltd”, is now “SEGplc”.

Our story

From one van to a group of three companies.

2010

One electrician, one van

Michael Simm, a time-served electrician, starts his own company on high-end Hertfordshire new builds, then smart-home and data work.

2010s

Social housing at scale

The business grows into planned and reactive programmes for housing associations and councils — thousands of EICRs, rewires and alarm upgrades.

2024

SEG is formed

Michael and Russell Solts merge their companies. Russell brings 35 years of commercial leadership; Michael runs operations.

2025

SEG House, Chiswell Green

The group buys its own St Albans base — office, workshop, solar on the roof, EV chargers on the drive, electric vans.

2026

A group to watch

SEGcore (IT & security) and SEGwifi join the group, all running on SEG Command, our in-house platform. The next growth phase begins.

Four-year apprenticeship with Ardmore Construction, City & Guilds 2391, ECS Black Card. Founded the original company in 2010. Leads operations, the engineering team and the group’s AI and systems work, and heads SEGwifi.

Our people

Engineers we trained. Apprentices we always take on.

SEG has kept a minimum of three apprentices in training since the start, even as the cost of doing so has risen sharply. Many of today’s engineers and supervisors started here at 16 or 17. Our office team books, schedules and checks every job from SEG House — no call centre, no answering service.

We photograph everything

Before, during and after, on every job. It keeps standards up and gives you evidence.

Our own people

SEG-employed engineers, DBS-checked for housing work, trained in-house. We don’t sub out the work you hired us for.

Systems before growth

We paused expansion for a year to build SEG Command and put AI to work — with a human in the loop. Now we scale on solid ground.

Practising what we install

32 solar panels and EV chargers at SEG House, and an electric fleet. We advise from experience, not a brochure.
