LD1 fire alarms in Stevenage’s high-rise blocks.

Aico smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms in all 452 flats in seven tower blocks, alongside the sprinkler programme.

Mains-powered Aico alarm on a ceiling

When sprinklers were fitted in Stevenage Borough Council’s high-rise blocks, Mulalley gave us the fire detection in every flat: an upgrade to LD1 with mains-powered, interlinked Aico smoke, heat and carbon monoxide alarms. Seven blocks, 452 flats, from September 2020 to 2023.

The blocks

  • Brent Court: 103 flats
  • Harrow Court: 103 flats
  • The Towers: 50 flats
  • High Plash: 50 flats
  • Highcroft: 50 flats
  • Shaftesbury Court: 48 flats (plus earthing upgrades)
  • Gladstone Court: 48 flats

253 flats needed a full new LD1 system, 182 already had LD2 detection that we extended to LD1, and 17 needed a smaller upgrade. Each flat was signed off and certificated, block by block.

What LD1 means

LD1 is the highest grade of detection for a home under BS 5839-6: an alarm in every room where a fire could start, plus the hallway, not just the escape route. Smoke alarms go in the hall and living areas, heat alarms in kitchens, and carbon monoxide alarms where there is a fuel-burning appliance. All of them are mains powered with a battery back-up and linked, so a fire in one room sounds every alarm in the flat. Read more on LD1, LD2 and LD3 fire alarm grades.

How the work ran

Seven tower blocks means hundreds of flat appointments, all with residents at home. We book every flat in advance, run the cables as neatly as the construction allows, test every alarm and the interlink before we leave, and show the resident how to test and silence it. Results are recorded flat by flat against each block.

Questions we’re asked

What is an LD1 fire alarm system?

The highest grade for a home under BS 5839-6: detection in every room where a fire might start, plus the escape route, all mains powered and interlinked.

Why upgrade to LD1 when sprinklers are going in?

Sprinklers control a fire; alarms warn people early so they can get out or stay safely put. The two work together, so the high-rise programme upgraded both.

Which alarms do you fit?

Aico mains-powered alarms with battery back-up: smoke, heat and carbon monoxide, interlinked so they all sound together.

How long does each flat take?

Usually a few hours, depending on the layout and whether existing alarms are being extended or replaced.

Which Stevenage high-rise blocks did you do?

Brent Court, Harrow Court, The Towers, High Plash, Highcroft, Shaftesbury Court and Gladstone Court: 452 flats from 2020 to 2023.
