- Zelos bollards, Silkin Court
Zelos bollards at Silkin Court, Stevenage.
46 Designplan Zelos bollards lighting the paths of a supported housing scheme, plus 12 more at Highfield Court.

Silkin Court in Stevenage is a supported housing scheme with paths running between the residents’ buildings. For Mulalley, on Stevenage Borough Council’s major works programme, we lit those paths with 46 Designplan Zelos bollards and a matching Zelos wall light, fed in armoured cable through new ducts. Designplan has since published its own case study on Silkin Court.
Silkin Court
Residents walk between the buildings after dark, so the aim was paths lit evenly from end to end, with fittings that would stand up to knocks and weather for years. The Zelos bollards line every path, and their photocells bring them on at dusk.

The install
- September 2021: armoured cables pulled through the new ducts along the paths.
- December 2021: conduit to the rear of the building for the outside lights, then the bollards set on their bases and the cables glanded and terminated.
- Each bollard levelled before it was fixed, so the row reads straight down the path.
- March 2022: the last fitting in, everything tested and certificated.
- April 2022: the temporary site lighting taken away.

Highfield Court: 12 more
In spring 2023 we fitted 12 more Zelos bollards and two wall lights at Highfield Court, to Designplan’s external lighting design. The bases were set in sub-base, the cables jointed in sealed boxes, each bollard levelled, and the circuit tested before handover. We have also fitted eight at Runswick.

Why Zelos
- Vandal resistant: built to take knocks in a public space.
- Even light along the path, from one bollard to the next.
- Photocell on each one, so they come on at dusk and go off at dawn.
- A matching wall light, so the paths and the building look like one scheme.

Questions we’re asked
How many Zelos bollards have you fitted?
66 in Stevenage: 46 at Silkin Court, 12 at Highfield Court and 8 at Runswick, plus three Zelos wall lights.
How are the bollards wired?
In armoured cable through ducts under the paths, jointed in sealed boxes and terminated in each bollard's base.
Can you do the groundwork too?
We work alongside the groundworkers: they dig and reinstate, we lay the ducts and cables, set the bollards and test them. On smaller jobs we can arrange the whole thing.
Do the bollards need a timer?
No. Each one has a photocell, so it switches on at dusk and off at dawn.
Did Designplan feature the project?
Yes. Designplan published its own Silkin Court case study on its website.
