Quadevo, Quadrangle, Zelos and Quadring in Stevenage Borough Council blocks of flats, counted from our orders since 2019.

Designplan Quadevo emergency fitting in a Stevenage block of flats

Designplan’s vandal-resistant LED fittings are the standard for communal lighting in Stevenage Borough Council’s blocks of flats, and we have fitted more of them than anything else. Counting from the final accounts and valuations on every Stevenage order since 2019, we have fitted 1,985 Designplan fittings, and converted 374 more to emergency lighting.

By programme: about 540 in 2019 to 2021, 730 in 2021 to 2023, 340 in 2023 to 2024 and 380 since, with more going in every month on the current contract. Separately, in 2020 we fitted emergency gear trays into 324 existing fittings across 41 blocks, plus 50 more later: see emergency lighting in Stevenage.

Quadevo: inside the blocks

The Quadevo is the fitting on almost every stair and landing we have done. It is vandal resistant, has a microwave presence sensor so it dims when nobody is about, and comes in an emergency version with a three-hour battery, so one fitting style covers both normal and emergency lighting. Each one is labelled to match the emergency lighting log.

Quadrangle: outside

Outside, at entrances, walkways and bin stores, we fit the Quadrangle: the same family, built for outdoors, with a photocell so it comes on at dusk. Where an external light is on the escape route it gets an emergency pack too.

Zelos bollards

We have fitted 66 Zelos bollards on three Stevenage sites: 46 along the paths at Silkin Court, 12 at Highfield Court and 8 at Runswick. Read the Zelos bollard case study.

Quadring: covered walkways

At Fred Millard Court we fitted 62 Quadring fittings along the covered walkways, run in conduit under the canopy, and swapped the gear trays in 43 more.

How we fit them

  • Positions from the survey and the lighting design, so the escape route, changes of direction and final exits are covered.
  • Containment first, then the fittings, with fixings kept off any ceiling that contains asbestos.
  • Sensors set on site: microwave sensitivity and hold times inside, photocells outside.
  • Labelled and logged: every emergency fitting gets an ID label that matches the log book and the drawing.
  • Tested and certificated, with an emergency lighting certificate and a photo of each fitting in the handover pack.
Running a programme of blocks? Call 01727 238 999 or tell us about the work. We survey, programme the blocks, keep residents informed and hand over certificates and photo audits block by block.

Questions we’re asked

How many Designplan fittings have you installed?

1,985 in Stevenage blocks of flats since 2019, counted from the orders: 1,157 Quadevo, 689 Quadrangle, 66 Zelos bollards, 62 Quadring, 8 LLX and 3 Zelos wall lights. We have also converted 374 existing fittings to emergency lighting.

Why do housing providers use Designplan?

The fittings are built to be vandal resistant, they have sensors to cut energy use in communal areas, and the same styles come in emergency versions, so a whole block can be lit in one consistent range.

Can you fit Designplan emergency lighting into existing fittings?

Often. In 2020 we fitted emergency gear trays into 324 existing fittings across 41 Stevenage blocks, rather than replacing them.

Do you supply as well as fit?

Yes. We order the fittings to the lighting design, fit them, set the sensors, and hand over the certificates.

Do you work outside Stevenage?

Yes. We fit communal lighting in blocks of flats across Hertfordshire, Bedfordshire, Buckinghamshire and London.
