An Andersen EV charger for a period cottage in Ayot Green.

The old garage board couldn’t take a charger, so we found a better route: a new EV board at the intake and a discreet armoured cable run to an Andersen A2.

The new owner of a period cottage, who had taken the keys the evening before, wanted an Andersen A2 charger installed. The garage board was obsolete and over-committed, so a better supply point and route were needed.

What we found

  • Garage board and both house boards were old-generation Square D - obsolete, with no DP RCBO or SPD available
  • Garage board fed from the house on a 45A MCB with many unknown circuits - not suitable for a 32A charger
  • Multiple C2 and C3 observations noted at the intake
  • Brittle 100A Henley block; TN-S supply
  • Water leak from a boss joint found dripping onto a board - dried and sealed as a temporary fix with client approval
  • A redundant dead relay, doorbell transformer and unneeded socket in the intake cupboard

What we did

  • Recommended and agreed a new charger position by the house intake instead of the garage
  • Cleared space at the intake by relocating adaptable boxes and removing redundant equipment
  • Replaced the brittle Henley block and installed a new 4-way FuseBox board with surge protection and a DP RCBO for the charger
  • Ran EV Ultra SWA cable clipped at 400mm centres, discreetly behind planting, to the charger
  • Installed the Andersen A2 7kW charger, using a modified gland arrangement to keep the IP seal
  • Torqued all terminations to the manufacturer's figures and fitted IP cover plates and cable retainer
  • Covered exposed single insulation in trunking
  • Set up the CT clamp and load balancing, and resolved account set-up with Andersen's helpline
  • Tested the new circuit: Ze, PFC, R1+R2, RCBO trip times and insulation resistance at 500V

Equipment used

  • Andersen A2 7kW 32A charger
  • FuseBox F2004M 4-way consumer unit with SPD
  • DP RCBO
  • EV Ultra SWA cable
  • 100A Henley block
