Garden lights back on in Totteridge, after a two-part fault.

A run of garden uplights went dark, then the floodlights tripped the next morning. We traced a damaged buried cable on the first visit and a tripped Lutron lighting module on the second.

Uplight and its cable lifted from the lawn to trace the fault

A homeowner in Totteridge had a run of small garden uplights stop working. The next morning, the floodlights on the house went off as well. The garden lighting runs from a Lutron lighting control system.

What we found

  • Moisture had got into one of the garden junction boxes
  • The small uplights are wired in series, so one fault takes out every light after it
  • A damaged cable buried in the soil at one of the lights
  • Next day: the Lutron module feeding the floodlights had tripped its 30mA protection. The same module also feeds two spotlight circuits in the top-floor bedrooms, so those and the floodlights being switched on together is the likely cause

What we did

  • Dried out the wet junction box and reconnected it
  • Bypassed the lights one at a time from the start of the circuit until the rest came back on, to pin down the faulty one
  • Lifted the damaged cable, replaced the light (with a spare the homeowner had) and reconnected the lights we had bypassed
  • Checked every light was back on before leaving
  • Went back the next morning for the floodlights: checked the Lutron module and confirmed the lights were drawing the expected current, then reset the protection and confirmed the floodlights working

Equipment used

  • Fluke T5 electrical tester
  • Lutron HomeWorks QS lighting control (existing)
