School external lighting upgrade, Ware.
Failing outdoor lights across a school site, fixed properly and upgraded to LED before open day.

Outdoor lights were failing across the grounds of a secondary school in Ware, Hertfordshire, and the school had been let down before. With the school’s open day coming up, the site team needed the grounds lit and safe after dark. We traced the faults, then came back to upgrade the lighting to LED.

The problem
Lights around the school site had been failing for some time: soffit and wall lights on the buildings and the lamp posts around the grounds. Previous fixes had not held, so the school asked us to look at it properly.
What we did
We started with a fault investigation in early October to find out exactly what was wrong. Then we returned to carry out the upgrade:
- Wall and soffit lights replaced with energy-efficient LED fittings.
- Lamp posts fitted with new LED heads.
- Emergency bulkheads replaced, so the routes out of the buildings stay lit if the power fails.
- Safe working on a live site: work areas barriered off around the entrances and paths while staff and visitors came and went.
The result
Grounds the school can rely on after dark, lower running costs and lower carbon. LED fittings use less energy and last far longer than the lamps they replace, which means fewer failures and fewer call-outs. We did what we said we would do, when we said we would do it.
Work in progress, October 2026. We will add photos of the finished site when the job is complete.
Lighting and electrical work for schools
Outdoor and emergency lighting is part of keeping a school safe. Emergency lighting needs a monthly functional test and an annual full-duration test, with the results logged. We test, repair and upgrade it, and can look after the rest of the site’s electrical compliance under one contract: see school electrical maintenance and emergency lighting.
