Solar panels lifted, stored and refitted for re-roofing in Welwyn Garden City.

On a housing re-roofing programme, we took the solar arrays off, kept them safe on the scaffold, then refitted, bird-meshed and tested them on the new roofs.

Solar panels refitted on a new tiled roof with bird mesh

Homes with roof-mounted solar PV were being re-roofed in a housing programme. SEG removed and stored the panels so the roofers could work, then refitted, protected and tested them once the new roofs were on.

What we found

  • The first house had 10 panels, inverter in the loft, generation meter and PV isolator in the hall cupboard
  • Board there had no SPD and Type AC RCDs; PV on its own 6A RCBO
  • Steep, slippery roof pitch with heavy organic build-up around the panels
  • On refit day PV cables had not been brought out onto the new roof and one tile was broken - flagged to the roofers

What we did

  • Safely isolated the AC supply and inverter before work
  • Disconnected the arrays and made the leads safe with Wago connectors
  • Cleared moss and organic matter for a safer working area
  • Removed, cleaned and strapped the panels securely to the scaffold for storage
  • Roofers removed and refitted the brackets and rails around the new tiles
  • Refitted the panels on the new roofs and reconnected them
  • Fitted bird mesh around the full perimeter of each array
  • Re-energised and tested the systems; scaffold left clear and tidy

Equipment used

  • Bird mesh
  • Wago connectors
