What we found

  • Downlights joined with connector blocks, with exposed conductor whiskers
  • Socket back box not secured (missing lug) and a broken socket
  • Twin and earth clipped externally with no mechanical or UV protection
  • Poor end-to-end readings on a ring final circuit caused by loose terminations
  • Damaged PIR on the rear external light

What we did

  • Replaced the main distribution board, building a spacer to bridge two wall depths, and relocated the main earthing terminal
  • Installed a 2-pole isolation switch and used the old enclosure as an isolated joint box
  • Replaced the utility-room and outbuilding boards (Wylex), fitting banjos and crimped fly leads to the SWA glands for sound earths
  • Re-terminated every downlight with Wago connectors in safe enclosures and replaced bathroom downlights with IP-rated units
  • Replaced damaged sockets and repositioned an external socket to keep water out
  • Fitted new shed lights and external lanterns
  • Ran new conduit discreetly behind the guttering to protect the external cable
  • Split the ring, found and tightened loose terminations, and retested to good readings
  • Torqued all terminals, tested RCDs, polarity and earth fault loop at all points, and labelled all boards

Equipment used

  • Wylex consumer units / distribution boards
  • Wylex RCBOs
  • Wago connectors
  • IP-rated downlights
  • External lanterns
