A Zappi EV charger and a new EV board in St Albans.

The supply and gas bonding needed upgrading before a family home could charge an electric car. We sorted both, then fitted and commissioned the charger.

Black tethered myenergi Zappi charger on the side of the garage

The homeowners were switching to a fully electric car and wanted a myenergi Zappi on the side of the garage. The survey found the supply and bonding needed upgrading first, and the route had to avoid the underfloor heating.

What we found

  • Main fuse labelled 60A with 16mm supplier tails - upgrade recommended for full EV use
  • Gas bonding only 6mm - needed upgrading to 10mm
  • Existing board (2021 works) had poor terminations to SWA and single insulation outside the enclosure
  • Underfloor heating zones throughout the ground floor ruled out a route under the floor, so cables went above the skirting and through the garage

What we did

  • Installed a new FuseBox EV board under the stairs with Type 2 surge protection (SPD), 100A main switch, a 32A 30mA RCBO for the charger and a 6A RCBO for future porch lighting
  • Fitted a Henley block and ran tails to the new board
  • Ran 6mm twin and earth plus a data cable for the charger in MT4 trunking through the garage
  • Installed a black tethered myenergi Zappi on the side of the garage with a CT clamp, connected it to Wi-Fi and set it up
  • Fitted and labelled a 32A rotary isolator next to the charger
  • Upgraded the gas bonding to 10mm and labelled it
  • Ran a lighting supply into the garage ready for the planned porch refurbishment
  • Board left un-energised until Octopus Energy upgraded the incoming supply, then returned to connect, test and commission

Equipment used

  • myenergi Zappi (black, tethered)
  • FuseBox consumer unit with SPD1MT2 surge protection
  • FuseBox 32A RCBO
  • 32A rotary isolator
  • MT4 trunking
  • CT clamp
