The brief

The owner wanted a bright, modern shop floor that shows off the stock, back-of-house areas that are safe and easy to work in, and a way to deter theft and keep an eye on the shop when nobody is there. Everything had to happen around trading hours and a busy physio treatment room inside the shop.

Lighting

  • Shop floor: new LED lighting throughout, so trainers and clothing look true to colour and the shop feels open and bright.
  • Office and store room: 5 ft LED vapour-proof fittings, which suit storage areas and are cheap to run.
  • Plant room: new LED lights with cabling run in trunking.
  • Shutter: the shutter switch, which had been running from a plug, moved onto a proper fused spur.

Changing to LED cut the running cost of the lights and the time spent replacing tubes. We swapped fittings over in stages so the shop and treatment room always had light.

Power and safety

  • EICR of the whole installation, with the remedial work completed afterwards, including identifying every circuit at the board.
  • New distribution board to replace the old one, with new trunking to tidy the cabling.
  • Staff kitchen: extra sockets for the kettle, fridge and microwave, and a supply for the water heater, with the circuit protection upgraded to suit.
  • Air conditioning: three new supplies run up to the roof-mounted air conditioning units and connected.

A Verkada camera system as a deterrent

In May 2026 we installed a Verkada camera system. Cameras that customers can see are a deterrent in their own right, and Verkada adds what a small shop owner actually needs:

  • Live and recorded footage on a phone, from anywhere, without logging in to a box under the counter.
  • No recorder to steal: footage is stored on the camera and managed in the cloud.
  • Fast search: find a person or a time quickly instead of scrubbing through hours of video.
  • Easy sharing: send a clip to the police or the insurer in a couple of clicks.

We also advised on CCTV signage, which UK data protection guidance expects wherever cameras record people. See CCTV and AI cameras.

Why one contractor for all of it

The same team that knows the shop’s board, lighting and cable routes fitted the cameras, so the cameras went on a protected supply in the right places, first time. One number to call for a fault, a new socket or another camera. See retail lighting and CCTV for how we work with other shops.

Questions we’re asked

Can the shop owner see the cameras from home?

Yes. Verkada cameras are managed in the cloud, so the owner can watch live or look back at footage from a phone or laptop, wherever they are.

Does the CCTV need a recorder in the shop?

No. Verkada cameras record onto storage inside the camera and are managed through Verkada’s online platform, so there is no recorder box to steal or fail.

Can you work around opening hours?

Yes. On this shop we have worked early mornings and around the treatment room, so the shop kept trading throughout.
